SCENE : prabal gurung spring 2012

“It’s a play on darkness and light,” explained MAC makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury of the intense ombré lips at Prabal Gurung’s Spring 2012 show. The inspiration, Japanese photographer Nobuyoshi Araki’s 1997 photographic series “Sensual Flowers” guided the visually stunning and statement-making bursts of color on the runway. Faces shone with a sci-fi silver hue and yet-to-be released MAC Metal-X Cream Eyeshadows lent eyes a smokey reflective pall – both of which paled in comparison to Tillbury’s vivid lips. “Prabal wanted the lips to feel like there was an orchid growing out of them,” said Tilbury of the matte fuchsia shade that was the clear centerpiece of model’s faces. Though a brightly smoked lip will make for a difficult transition to day wear, Gurung’s parade of models with their slicked-back hair and two-tone reverse half-moon nails, made a breathtaking statement on the runway that only served to compliment his daring and powerful designs.
